According to hospital officials, doctors at Fortis Escorts in Okhla successfully performed an autologous liver transplant on a 35-year-old woman from Kyrgyzstan, whose liver was 75% damaged. The hospital administration added that this was the second such transplant performed in India.

Mrs. Altynai Tentimishova underwent an initial examination in Kyrgyzstan, where it was determined that she had Echinococcosis Multilocularis, a parasite illness that signifies the development of a slow-growing liver tumor and eventual organ damage. In the press release held on Thursday, the doctors revealed that it is a rare health condition with a 10% recurrence possibility.

The doctors decided to conduct an autologous liver transplant as a significant portion of the liver was damaged. According to the surgical team, the diseased portion of the liver was removed, the damaged veins were repaired or replaced with artificial veins, and the liver was then implanted back into the body.

The transplant team was comprised of a team of doctors led by Dr. Vivek Vij, chairman of the liver transplant at Fortis Escorts, Okhla, New Delhi, and took nearly eight hours. Dr. Bidesh Chandra Paul, zonal director of Fortis Escorts, Okhla, stated that this is a significant milestone in healthcare and medical sciences as an autologous liver transplant requires a great deal of experience and skill.
